My first visit to India was in 2008, following 2 months teaching in Sri Lanka during their Civil War, where I witnessed incredible violence perpetrated by the genocidal Buddhist government against the Tamil and Muslim minorities.

I was on a $15 per day budget for food, lodging and travel. I started at the tip in Trivandrum and worked my up the west coast by train to Rajasthan and across to Kolkata.

This was before the iPhone was launched. I have shockingly few pictures of myself, as I was, mostly, alone. The pics here were taken on film and a 2002 Olympus digital.

In Delhi, my clothes were briefly lost, so a new acquaintance lent me a few of his. The Bono sunglasses were the cheapest available after mine were broken in a motorcycle accident in Sri Lanka. The clothes that were, eventually, returned to me, were inadequate for the winter weather.

I’m flying back to Amma India on Mother’s Day, excited to start the journey of a million miles, at least. I have no deadline. This is my life now. With no need for speed, the urgency lifted, I’m excited to enjoy India as a spectator.

I finally feel more relaxed in Delhi than in Brooklyn.
